   When Christopher Columbus disembarking in San Salvador 'discovered' the corn. Transferring the first seeds to Spain, the corn settled on the Iberian peninsula to pass through the Portuguese trade routes across the globe. The corn growing zone is now very wide, located from 40⁰ degrees South to 58⁰ North latitude and occurring at altitudes ranging from sea level to 3,800-4,000m.
   The systematic cultivation of corn in Greece dates back to the 19th century. Its nutritional value falls short of other cereals, although in many countries, particularly Latin America, it is a basic nutritional asset. Cultivated for the production of seeds and green grass. Corn flour is used for bread and bakery products, confectionery and brewing, and exported starch in the baby food industry.
